CAR-T away from home
Our CAR-T Away from Home Service, funded by Dalata Hotel Group, helps ease this burden with both the costs incurred during CAR-T treatment as well as logistical challenges.
About the service
CAR-T (Chimeric Antigen Receptor) cell therapy is a pioneering treatment which was Initially approved for B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (B-cell ALL), It is now also being used in some cases of T-cell ALL, CLL, and AML.
Because CAR-T requires patients to stay close to a hospital before, during, and after treatment, financial pressures can build quickly. With only 24 CAR-T centres in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, many people have to travel far from home.
At Leukaemia Care, we believe money should never be a barrier to treatment. That’s why we provide both financial and accommodation support to help families through this stage.
Our CAR-T away from home service will provide eligible people with:
- A one-off grant of £500.
- Hotel accommodation for two people for up to 30 nights (where available) near your CAR-T treatment centre.
What we will fund
Financial grant
- A one-off, non-means-tested £500 grant.
- Can be used for: travel, food, energy bills, or other expenses linked to CAR-T therapy.
Hotel accommodation
- Free accommodation in one double or twin room, for up to two people. The maximum number of nights will be 30, but this will depend on availability at the time.
- Hotels are provided through our partner Dalata, close to CAR-T centres. They operate the Maldron and Clayton hotels.
- Accommodation is booked by us in advance, it cannot be exchanged for money or vouchers.
Who can apply (eligibility)
- You have a diagnosis of leukaemia, MDS, or MPN.
- You live more than one hour’s drive from your CAR-T centre (to qualify for the hotel)
- You are currently undergoing CAR-T therapy ( your treatment is planned, and cells have not yet been re-infused).
This can include NHS-approved treatments and clinical trials.
Other things to note
- One grant and hotel stay per family.
- You must apply before conditioning chemotherapy or cell re-infusion starts.
- Previous recipients of other Leukaemia Care grants (Travel Fund, Hardship Fund, Cost of Living Fund) may still apply.
